Scared Out of My Mind

I started biting my nails the moment I laid my eyes on this:
Yes, the day has finally come and oh how I dread it.
Today I got almost everything done, I still don't know what unit I'm going to be with, but it is highly likely to be with the team I really really don't want to be a part of. I've decided against going next week to find out. I'm going to use the next week or so to pray pray and pray some more that whatever happens works out for the best.

Things I'm not looking forward to:

1. Hospital smell (something that never bothered me in the past).

2. My shyness, my incessant blushing during rounds, that fear at the pit of my stomach when I know a question is heading my way.

3. The feeling I get when I don't know the answer to something.

4. The people. I'm not up for all the politics, the gossip, the judgement, the jealousy.

5. Forming new friendships with my colleagues. I really don't like mixing work and play. I know for a fact that working with friends is never a good idea, so I'm hoping to God that the people I work with are not the kind of people that expect me to be their best friend all of a sudden and start doing things together (even during working hours). I like my privacy and I LOVE my space.

6. Dealing with my seniors. Some people are able to pull down those walls between themselves and their bosses, they become 'friends', exchange numbers, socialise even! Not me....no....I actually build an even higher wall!
All I am good for is being polite, smiling and saying:
"Good morning/good afternoon/y36ekom il3afya/thank you/ur welcome/yes/no".
I'm not joking. I am so bad, that I know people sometimes get offended by how little I say. I seem unintrested and end up making them feel uncomfortable.
I cant count the times I've done that to people!! Ahhh if only they knew why.

7. Waiting for elevators and the substitute of going up or down stairs with someone right behind me. Why don't people understand the concept of SPACE.
(And if someone things I'm exaggerating then you need to know that I have a phobia of falling on stairs, especially when I hear footsteps behind me).

8. Sleeping there when I'm on-call. I heard once that the doctor's rooms in the basement are haunted! Madri itha sij.

9. The opposite sex. And interacting with them. Boys bore me. Why dont they understand that and leave me alone? At work I'm a "Hi, shlonik(ch)/shakhbarik(ch), yalla gotta run, cya soon" kinda person. Me no likey standing in hallways. Even if I havent seen you in months. I prefer sitting down somewhere and watching people do whatever they're doing, in SILENCE.

10. THE RESPONSIBILITY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Plz plz make the pain in my chest go away? 2 days straight? Is this how it feels to have a panic attack?
Where is this cowardliness coming from?
Enough! Stick it up woman!

*Pic is of baby 7amoud...he's been teething lately and he's been biting anything in his path of destruction, like his hand, my trouser leg, my hand, my mobile...u name it he'll use it. Maskeeeeeeeeeeeeeeen 7bebi!!

I am sort of like you in shyness, the boss thing, the oppoisite sex and interacting with others.. it took me years and I still am shy around people.. maybe a bit better but I cannot imagine dealing with new people everyday!

Hijacked your post .... apologies.

1. don't be silly, they all smell like crap. Esp. the OT. It's like the new car smell only not as much fun.

2. That'll soon be fixed because the fresh meat (medical students) get picked on first and the bastards usually have all the answers memorized.

3. Just say I don't know; you'll look dumb though not as dumb as you would if you made something up.

4. It's just like being in high school, everybody is a 4 year old when it come to hospital politics.

5. You will. Part of a 6-24 hour work day. It's not that bad.

6. Number exchanging will happen on day one, there is no internal paging system in most hospitals. Seniors are generally good. I tend to come off as bossy. I think it may be because I hate being at work.

7. Don't know what to say about that one.

8. pffft urban myth (see told you; the people you will be working with are FOUR YEAR OLDS)

9. If it's any consolation I find women far more interesting as well ....

10. It's like riding a bike; after a few scrapes and a couple of falls you'll get used to it.

So don't worry it'll be fun. (Awkward for the first few weeks; but fun none the less)

Congrats.

You know, my greatest fear when I get behind the car is that this is the day I'm going to get somebody killed.

Hopefully, you don't yet have the authority to do that...

Kidding.

Good luck, I really hope that you can make a positive difference!

I guess the last point, Responsibility, is whats causing u all this panic...

U r a DR. ... u have taken the oath. when u walk into a room with a sick patient, they will look at u with such hope, that u have, after god, have the answer to their pain and can help them, they hang into ur every word. Dont let them down, u have to be strong for their sake, sick people are the most frightened people on earth, and u are there to help... and u surving 7 years of torture in Kuwait University are more than up to the challenge. I believe if u can graduate from KU, u can do every thing!

Stand tall, breatheeeeeee and remind ur self this is not about u, this is all about helping people in need.

o let me tell u this little story...

whenever we complain about how life is hard, or how work is hard, mom would tell us this story

"she had just graduated med school, and she is pregnant with her third child, in her ninth month, and her husband was still abroad studying, she had two babies at her empty house and she was doing night shifts, she was not allowed to sit down during il khafara, she was to walk on her swollen feet all night long (in ER or ba6enya madry which) and when she tried to sit for 5 minutes on a chair to breathe, the supervisor Dr yelled in her face to stand up...) Fa dont worry... inshallah everything will be fine... im sure there that supervisor dr. is now retired o having the time of his life travelling somehwere or bothering the maids in his house about what his wife wanted them to cook for lunch ...

Good luck ... :D

Dandoooooon: Laaaaaa!! Im sorry!! La 5th year is nothing to worry about it....sadgeni u'll get used to it. Its not like work. If u want 5th year advice let me know ;>

Sh7afana: LOL akeeed im one of them! Akeed imdarisni as a student hehehe

Jooj: Good idea. Positive thoughts. Positive thoughts.

KTDP: Laaa! Bil 3aks, i love long comments providing theres numbering involved!
1. E but it doesnt bother me. The only smell that really really bothers me is bad breath. I can deal with BO, poo, pee, barf...but not bad breath and worst yet coffee breath during rounds. God I dont know how im going to manage. I'm gonnabe the one with pockets full of gum and sweets. I am known as 'the baqala' by those who have rotated with me. At one point i brought along a little bag full of sweets that i left at the nurses station. Everyones breath must be fresh around me.

2. Waaaakhizyaaaaaa!! Im not gonna let them answer and be all smug (like i used to be when i answered something the trainees and assistants didnt know)!!

3. "I don't know" is my 2nd name. 3rd if you count "The Baqala" ;P

4. Then I'll be the one hiding in the cloakroom during break.

5. Every person I've met from the medical field has issues. Issues that i cant fix. I've had enough!

6. I know theyre good. But i want to be friendly with them, like how my friends are. I dont want to be always formal and quiet like i was when i was a student.

9. Which man doesnt? :P

10. Hope so, thanks :>

Eostre: I hope so too. And getting someone killed isnt that easy, its the last of my worries.

Dalal: Dalooooooool? My Dalool?? ;P

Nyxxie: Thanks for the warm wishes ;>

3anooda: Azeeedich, his mom's nicknames for him: bu6a6a o boksha! ;D

Eulalia: LOL again with the killing someone thing. Ya jma3a killing someone isnt that simple. Dont start putting things in my head hehehe!

Dee: A7ad yzifni?! :( Ah! I hadnt thought of that :(

Zaboo6a: Laaaa mo psycho wela shay! Aslan i7na ilsa7...ppl just dont know how to draw lines between professional and personal.

Hasan: You will pass insha Allah. O itsalim o tamshi is perfect! Wish everyone was like u.

Cat: 7bebti intay ;* thanks so much!!!

Anonymous: Ish'hal da3await il6ayba?? :**** min bo2ich lay bab ilsama!!!!

Drained: EXACTLY!!! Welcome to the blog, do come again.

Amu: Thank u! ;>

Eshda3wa: Yeah thats it! I feel like im gonna throw up!!!

Daddy's Girl: Ambay ur mom's story 3awirat galbi! Allah y3enhom awal, kids and med school. O shofena il7en, ma3indina shay o we're so lazy. We must be like our mothers!!!

Ruby: LOOOOOOOOOOL intay ba3ad!!! Noone will die on my watch so help me God!
